How to Actually Play N64 in 2026

I’ve been deep in the N64 Project for a while now, buying every cartridge I can find, but I realized I never actually wrote about how I’m playing any of it. Truth is I run two different setups: an original N64 with a real Expansion Pak still installed under the memory panel on top. The other is an Analogue 3D on my desk, hooked up to my monitor and capture card. Between that and a couple of new controllers that landed in the last few months, it feels like modern N64 hardware quietly had its biggest year in a long time. So here’s an honest rundown of where things actually stand in 2026, starting with the part most of this hardware leans on to sell itself: FPGA.

What FPGA Actually Means (and What It Doesn’t)

You’ll see “FPGA” thrown around a lot with modern retro consoles, usually as shorthand for “the good kind of emulation.” It’s worth actually explaining what that means, because it’s a real technical distinction, not just marketing.

FPGA stands for field-programmable gate array. It’s a chip that can be configured, at the circuit level, to behave like a specific piece of hardware. A traditional emulator runs software that mimics what the original N64 would do, translating instructions in real time on a CPU. An FPGA works differently: it’s wired, electronically, to process signals the same way the original hardware did. It’s not literally the original Nintendo 64 chipset, so it’s technically still a recreation, but it’s working at the level of circuit logic and timing rather than software simulation.

The practical upside is accuracy and latency. Because there’s no software layer translating instructions on the fly, FPGA devices tend to have lower input lag. They also preserve hardware quirks (odd timing behaviors, edge cases) that software emulators sometimes smooth over or get slightly wrong. That said, FPGA isn’t automatically perfect. A core is only as good as the team that built it, and there can still be bugs or incomplete behavior in an FPGA recreation. Well-built modern software emulators, for their part, now handle the vast majority of games essentially identically to original hardware. FPGA’s real advantage isn’t “flawless” so much as “closer to the metal.” That comes with tradeoffs too: a smaller team building something bit by bit, rather than a massive open-source community iterating on software for two decades.

The Analogue 3D

This is the one I actually own, sitting on my desk hooked up to a monitor and capture card rather than a TV. I got mine when it first released back in November 2025, so I’ve been living with it since day one. It’s been a genuinely great experience. My favorite addition is Memories, the save-state system Analogue added in a firmware update this past May. It wasn’t even in the console at launch, despite being teased when the 3D was first announced, but once it landed, it changed how I play.

Every game gets its own list of save states right in the 3DOS library menu, up to 20 per game, with the option to pin ones you don’t want getting bumped when the list fills up. You can create or load one with a simple button combo, without backing out to the home screen. Going from “hope the game’s own save system was generous” to “save literally anywhere, anytime” is the single biggest quality-of-life jump over playing on original hardware.

The Analogue 3D is Analogue’s FPGA recreation of the N64, and after a long string of delays (originally slated for early 2025), it finally started shipping November 18, 2025. It launched at $249.99, with a post-tariff price bump to $269.99, and sold out quickly.

What It Actually Does

  • 100% compatible with original N64 cartridges. Every game, no exceptions reported.
  • 4K output over HDMI 2.1, with HDR and VRR support, so it looks dramatically better than the original composite/S-Video output on a modern TV.
  • Region-free.
  • Built-in Expansion Pak emulation. Games that needed the Expansion Pak, Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, Majora’s Mask, just work, with no physical pak required.
  • Virtual Rumble Pak and Controller Pak support, or you can still plug in real ones if you’re using an original controller, since it has four original-style controller ports.
  • Bluetooth LE and dual-band WiFi built in, running Analogue’s own 3DOS.

For controllers, I mostly switch between my original N64 pad and a Hori Mini Pad, a third-party controller Hori released late in the N64’s life, exclusively in Japan. It ditches the original’s three-pronged shape for a smaller, more conventional layout. The joystick is also noticeably smoother than the original, without the white powdery residue N64 sticks are infamous for developing. The tradeoff is that the more sensitive stick can make precise aiming in something like GoldenEye or Perfect Dark a little trickier. Since it was Japan-only, it’s become a genuine collector’s item, and prices reflect that.

The Controller Problem, and Two Different Fixes

Here’s the thing nobody selling you a shiny new console mentions: the actual weak point in playing N64 today usually isn’t the console, it’s the controller. Original N64 pads are all 25+ years old at this point, and stick drift on the original joystick is basically inevitable.

8BitDo shipped two different products in the last few months that address this from two different directions, depending on whether you’ve gone the Analogue 3D route or you’re still running an original console.

8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller ($39.99, sold separately from the Analogue 3D) is the companion pad built specifically for the 3D, though it also works on Switch/Switch 2, Windows, and Android. The headline feature is a hall-effect joystick, which uses magnets instead of physical contact to register stick position, meaning no drift, ever. It still keeps the original N64 stick’s shape and feel. It also has vibration support and ships in a lineup of Funtastic-era colorways (Watermelon, Jungle, Ice, Smoke, Fire, Gold, Grape, Clear), with shipments starting February 2026.

8BitDo Retro Receiver ($24.99, launched March 2026) is for the opposite situation: you’re still running your actual original N64 console and don’t want to replace it, you just want a controller that isn’t falling apart. It’s a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the original console and lets modern controllers, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch Pro, or the NSO N64 controller, connect wirelessly to real, unmodified hardware.

So Which One Actually Makes Sense?

If the games matter more to you than the specific box they run on, and you want the visual upgrade, the Analogue 3D plus the 8BitDo 64 controller is the modern setup. Better output, a drift-proof controller, and no compatibility headaches with Expansion Pak titles.

If keeping the original console matters to you, whether that’s for collecting reasons or just the “this is the actual hardware” feeling, the Retro Receiver is worth it. It’s a low-cost fix for the one part of original hardware that’s guaranteed to wear out.

I’m not really in one camp. My original N64, real Expansion Pak and all, stays hooked up to a CRT, and that’s what I reach for when I’m just playing for myself. The Analogue 3D lives on my desk connected to my monitor and a capture card, so it’s what I use when I’m at the computer or recording footage for this blog or the channel. Different tools for different moments, not one replacing the other.
